The Schoolhouse was moved in 2005 to vacant lot located across the street from Main Street Baptist Church in the 500 block of Main Street.
The School House will serve as a museum on early education in Isle of Wight, with a focus on schools for black students.
The Smithfield Isle of Wight Convention and Visitors Center is overseeing the project.
The School House Museum is Smithfield's project for the 2007 Virginia Community Program, which coordinates statewide tourism events as part of Jamestown 2007.
The cost of renovating the school will be about $301,000. The committee is looking for grants, private donations and community support to raise funds.
A compilation of oral histories from people who taught or attended schools for blacks is being conducted by Hampton University's Oral Research Center.
Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Virginia State University in Petersburg are also offering assistance.
The School House Museum will be open to the public in May 2007.
